Sleep for new dads

Can’t sleep even when the baby sleeps? Here’s what helps

The baby is finally asleep, and you're wide awake, staring at the ceiling. It's one of the most frustrating parts of new parenthood, and lots of dads deal with it. The good news is that a few changes often help, and if they don't, help is out there.

Why it happens

  • Your brain stays on alert, listening for the baby even when they're quiet.
  • Worry kicks in the moment things go still.
  • Your body clock is scrambled from weeks of broken nights.
  • Caffeine to get through the day keeps you up at night.
  • Anxiety or depression. Not being able to sleep even when you can is a common sign in new dads.

What helps

  • Take turns on nights. If one of you is on duty, the other can sleep with earplugs or in another room, knowing the baby is covered.
  • Cut off caffeine early, ideally by early afternoon.
  • Skip the nightcap. Alcohol may help you drop off, but it wakes you up later and makes sleep worse.
  • Screens down before bed. Scrolling keeps your brain wired.
  • Give worries a home. Jot them on paper before bed so your head doesn't have to hold them.
  • If you can't sleep, get up. After about 20 minutes, go somewhere dim and do something quiet until you feel sleepy, then try again.
  • Take daylight in the morning. A few minutes outside helps reset your body clock.

When to get help

If you've been unable to sleep even when you have the chance for more than two weeks, or it comes with constant worry, low mood, or feeling numb, talk to your doctor. Sleep problems in new dads are often linked to anxiety or depression, and both get better with treatment.
