Bonding as a dad

Not feeling bonded with your baby yet? That’s normal, and it grows

Lots of dads expect a rush of love the moment they hold their baby, and then feel guilty when it doesn't come. For many fathers, the bond builds slowly, through small everyday moments. It's normal, it's not a sign of anything wrong with you, and it grows.

Why it can take time

  • Newborns don't give much back at first. Smiles and eye contact usually come in the first couple of months.
  • You may get less time with the baby, especially if you're back at work or the baby is feeding a lot.
  • You're exhausted. It's hard to feel much of anything on no sleep.
  • Nobody showed you how. Many dads never saw their own fathers do the hands-on stuff.

Simple ways to bond

  • Skin to skin. Hold your baby against your bare chest. It calms babies and dads alike.
  • Own one routine. Bath time, the first morning change, or the bedtime story. Same time, every day, just you two.
  • Talk and sing. Your baby already knows your voice. Narrate your day, it doesn't matter what you say.
  • Take the baby out. A walk with the stroller or a carrier gives you time together and gives everyone a break.
  • Do the hard bits too. Soothing a crying baby is bonding. Every time you comfort them, you're building trust.
  • Put the phone away for a few minutes and just watch them. Babies change fast.

When to talk to someone

If you feel numb or nothing at all, don't want to be around the baby, or feel hopeless, that can be a sign of depression rather than a bonding problem, and it gets better with help. Read the signs of postpartum depression in dads or how to talk to your doctor. Other dads get it too: PSI's free dads' groups are a good place to say it out loud.

Common questions

Is it normal for a dad not to feel bonded with his baby?

Yes. Many fathers don't feel an instant bond. For lots of dads it builds over weeks and months through everyday care and time together.

How can a dad bond with a newborn?

Skin-to-skin contact, owning a daily routine like bath time, talking and singing to the baby, taking walks together, and soothing the baby when they cry all help.

When is not bonding a sign of something more?

If you feel numb, hopeless, or want to avoid the baby, it may be depression. Talk to a doctor. It is common and treatable.
